The Benin Traditional Council has warned that a queen in the palace of the Oba of Benin may be removed following an incident involving social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, the council described the episode as a “serious breach of protocol” and a desecration of the palace’s sacred grounds.
It disclosed that Peller gained unauthorised access to the palace on March 6, 2026, during his nationwide tour, without obtaining the necessary approval.
According to the council, Adelaja and his entourage entered the palace without permission, and their conduct led to embarrassment and a disruption of peace within the premises.
Reaffirming the sanctity of the palace, the council stressed that it is not a public space or a venue for trivial content creation, but the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin.
Following a preliminary investigation, disciplinary measures have been taken against those implicated. A chief connected to the incident has been suspended indefinitely, while a palace staff member, Mr Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for allegedly facilitating the unauthorised entry.
The council also revealed that a queen seen in the incident is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings, which could result in her removal from the palace in line with Benin customs and traditions.
Additionally, Peller has been invited to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his actions but has yet to comply.
The council insisted that he must tender an unreserved written apology for the unauthorised visit and the embarrassment caused.
