Some prominent traditional rulers in the Southwest geopolitical zone are intensifying efforts towards ensuring the return of the Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, from self – exile.
The monarchs backing his full freedom and return to Nigeria to join his people included the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enita Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja 11, Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja among others.
Igboho’s spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki, who disclosed this in a statement said that some traditional rulers in Southwest were instrumental to facilitating Igboho’s clearance to return home from abroad.
The Daily Crucible reports that Igboho had in 2025, lamented his stay in exile, saying he was fed up and pleaded with President Bola Tinubu-led federal government to expunge his name from wanted list.
Igboho’s home located around Soka area in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, was stormed in July, 2021 by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) and some personnel of the Nigerian Army, killing two of his aides and arresting over a dozen others during the administration of Late Muhammadu Buhari.
He was subsequently declared wanted by Buhari’s administration after he fled the country.
Confirming the efforts being made by some Yoruba monarchs to ensure his return to Nigeria, Koiki stated that arrangements were underway in that direction and that more details would be made public in the coming days.
He said, “This is a moment of joy for Ibadanland and Yorubaland as a whole. Chief Adeyemo is now cleared to return to Nigeria and is no longer being sought by government authorities.
“With the support of our royal father, the Olubadan of Ibadanland. Chief Sunday Adeyemo is now free to return home. He is a free man and will soon be back in Ibadan.”
He commended President Bola Tinubu, Yoruba monarchs across the region; Yoruba sons and daughters worldwide for their support during Igboho’s years in exile.
