Obaship Institution: Our Rallying Point Is Slipping Away

As Nigeria navigates the complexities of its democratic journey, a sense of unease pervades the nation. The current administration, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has come under intense scrutiny for its handling of critical issues. Critics argue that the government has failed to address the pressing needs of its citizens who are wallowing in poverty, instead prioritizing the interests of the ruling party.

As Nigeria marks June 12, one of the most significant concerns is the perceived compromise of key institutions, including the media, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Judiciary, and security agencies. These institutions, meant to serve as pillars of democracy, are seen as being co-opted by the ruling party, undermining their independence and effectiveness.

The media, in particular, is facing challenges in reporting critically on the administration. Feature articles that dare to question the government’s actions or policies are often met with resistance from media outlets, (I am a victim of such) fearful of repercussions or loss of government advertising revenue. This self-censorship undermines the media’s role as a watchdog, allowing the government to act with impunity. The media today is losing its strength of questioning and holding leaders accountable, while they continue to do ‘PR’. However, it is in our hands as we all, would become victims of whatever we make of our society.

The opposition parties, too, seem to be struggling to maintain their independence. Some members have decamped to the ruling party, while others remain in their parties, allegedly working to disrupt them from within. This has led to questions about the sincerity of their opposition and their commitment to holding the government accountable.

The failure of traditional watchdogs has further exacerbated Nigeria’s democratic woes. Activists, pressure groups, social crusaders, religious leaders and professional associations, once beacons of hope for accountability and good governance, have largely failed to hold the government accountable. Instead, many have succumbed to the allure of government patronage, romance politicians, and overlook maladministration in exchange for favor and influence. This Faustian bargain has undermined their credibility and effectiveness, leaving citizens disillusioned and vulnerable to further exploitation. By compromising their independence and integrity, these leaders have abandoned their critical role as guardians of democracy, allowing the government to act with increasing impunity.

This development has severe implications for Nigeria’s democracy. As these influential individuals and groups prioritize personal interests over public good, the space for genuine advocacy and dissent shrinks and citizens are left without effective representation. The consequence is a democracy in name only, where institutions and leaders prioritize self-enrichment over serving the people.

We have reached a time of ‘self over societal good’, a time where personal self interests have overshadowed the common good of all.

The result is a system where ideology and integrity are sacrificed for personal gains and survival. Nigeria is heading towards a one-party system, where dissenting voices are silenced and opposition is tokenistic. This trend threatens the very foundations of democracy, leaving citizens feeling disenfranchised and disillusioned.

In this context, the poem by Josiah Gilbert Holland resonates deeply: “GOD, give us men! A time like this demands Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands…” The nation needs leaders with integrity, courage and a commitment to public service, rather than personal aggrandizement.

As Nigeria stands at this crossroads, it is imperative that citizens demand more from their leaders. The nation’s future depends on the restoration of democratic institutions, the promotion of integrity and the empowerment of citizens to hold their government accountable. Only then can Nigeria realize its full potential and provide a better life for its citizens.

The question remains: what will be left when all surrenders to the current administration? Will Nigeria emerge stronger, or will the erosion of democracy and integrity leave it a shadow of its former self? The answer lies in the hands of its citizens and the leaders they choose.

In the national life of our dear country Nigeria, this is a time of economic upheaval, social unrest, and political corruption. It is a time when we must rise to decry the growing influence of demagogues and the decline of civic virtue. We must encourage personal qualities such as honour, integrity and resilience as the power of individuals needed to shape society. It is a plea for citizens to rise above self-interest and to work together for the common good of all and the country.

By embracing these values, Nigerians can reclaim their democracy and build a brighter future. It requires collective action, courage and a commitment to the principles of democracy, justice and equality. As the nation navigates these challenging times, one thing is clear: the future of Nigeria depends on the character of its citizens and the leaders they demand.

I hope media organisations would be bold enough to stand for the truth and publish articles like this to jolt us to reality and access how far we have gone as we celebrate June 12.

Will we rise to the challenge, or will we succumb to the forces of corruption and self-interest? The choice is ours, and the time to act is NOW!
