The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, SAN, OON, has made participation in the annual Iwaji Festival compulsory for all title holders in the kingdom.
The monarch declared that any title holder who failed to observe the festival will be excluded from sharing in designated community benefits and proceeds from Mkpalor title-taking ceremonies until the next Iwaji celebration.
Asagba Azinge gave the directive on Saturday, October 25, 2026, at the regular monthly Asagba-in-Council meeting held at Ogwa Ukwu Ahaba.
He reaffirmed that the Iwaji Festival remains a significant cultural tradition of the Asaba people, symbolising gratitude for a bountiful harvest, promoting unity and preserving the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage.
According to him, title holders have a responsibility to demonstrate commitment to the customs and traditions of Asaba and lead by example in preserving its cultural values.
He said the annual festival provides a vital platform for expressing gratitude, strengthening communal bonds and transmitting cherished traditions from one generation to another.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, is intended to reinforce collective participation in future celebrations and ensure the continued relevance of Asaba’s cultural institutions.
