ABEOKUTA: The Ogun State chapter of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has commiserated with its Leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, and the family of an indisputable Titan of the Obafemi Awolowo School of Politics, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who joined his ancestors on Friday.
In a release by Giwa Niyi Osoba, Chairman and Ogbeni Wale Adedayo, Publicity Secretary, the state chapter of Afenifere stated that Adebanjo was not just one of its leaders, he was also a pillar of Afenifere an organisation to which he devoted the better part of his life, describing him as the “last titan.”
It noted that whatever achievements are credited to the Government of the defunct Western Region under the able leadership of Awolowo, part of the credit goes to Adebanjo.
“He was an unwavering disciple of the late sage and dutifully carried out Party’s directives with the required discipline. He was not just a great Awoist, Adebanjo was a Yoruba patriot.
“Adebanjo’s Yoruba patriotism did not blind him to the inequity in Nigeria’s flawed Federal structure. He campaigned vigorously for a just and equitable Federation in which every part of Nigeria could develop at its own pace without let or hindrance till he died.
“We are of the firm belief that Adebanjo will be welcome with pats on the back on the other side by Awolowo, Chief Adekunle Ajasin, Senator Abraham Adesanya along with many other leaders who served our people with everything they had before their passages,” Afenifere concluded.
Similarly, the 2023 gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Hon. (Dr) Oladipupo Adebutu, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Adebanjo, leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere.
In a statement by his media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, Hon. Adebutu described Pa Adebanjo as a fearless advocate for democracy and a symbol of integrity in Nigeria’s political history.
The former federal lawmaker noted that the late nonagenarian, who began his political journey in 1943 and later aligned with the ideals of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, remained steadfast in his pursuit of true federalism, free education, and social welfare.
He also acknowledged the elder statesman’s sacrifices, including his exile during the Action Group crisis and his pivotal role in NADECO, where he stood firm against military rule following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election.
_”Chief Ayo Adebanjo was a pillar of progressive politics, a man of unshakable principles who dedicated his life to the betterment of Nigeria. His commitment to restructuring and justice set him apart as a true statesman,”_ Adebutu remarked.
He further commended Chief Adebanjo’s disciplined lifestyle and unwavering consistency, noting that while he may not have received national honours, he earned the deep respect and admiration of Nigerians for his lifelong dedication to good governance.
Hon. Adebutu extended his heartfelt condolences to Chief Adebanjo’s 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and associates praying for strength and comfort for the family during this difficult time.
He concluded that Chief Adebanjo’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who believe in justice, fairness, and the true ideals of democracy.
