No fewer than 10 people were confirmed dead following a renewed cult clash involving rival cult groups on Sunday morning at Obelle community in Emohua local government area of Rivers State.
The Daily Crucible reports that the frightening incident threw the residents panic and confusion.
The fear – stricken residents deserted the community for safety where they could find it, a development a source said was a step up of the previous Wednesday invasion of the same community by people believed to be armed members of a cult group that also left seven residents dead.
The feuding rival cults said to be Naked Wire and Carol cult groups, renewed their hostility in the community after about two years lull.
It was learnt that after the Wednesday’s kìllings, the group whose members lost their lives to the clash invaded Obelle community on Sunday and unleashed violence on the relatives of those believed to be members of the cult group that earlier killed seven people.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the clash, attributed the precipitating factor to levies from an oil company in the area.
Iringe -Koko gave the number of casualty as 10.
Iringe-Koko said: “It is a cult clash between loyalists of Naked Wire and Carol. They are fighting over the control of levies from an oil company operative in the area.
“About 10 people are confirmed dead but no arrest yet as investigation is ongoing.”
