The Students’ Wing of the Yayi Progressives Movement (YPM) has announced plans to stage a 10,000-student solidarity trek in support of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), describing the initiative as a peaceful demonstration of appreciation for his contributions to education, youth empowerment and community development.
The announcement was made by the YPM Students’ Wing Coordinator, Comrade Dotun Opaleye, during a gathering at Iweiroyin Press Centre, Abeokuta, the state capital on Monday.
The event had in attendance leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), party stakeholders, members of the academic community, student leaders and media executives.
Opaleye said the planned solidarity trek goes beyond a political event, describing it as a platform to encourage students’ participation in democratic processes, grassroots mobilisation and nation-building.
According to him, students remain the intellectual backbone of society and should actively contribute to governance through responsible civic engagement.
“It is because of this conviction that the Yayi Progressives Movement Students’ Wing has resolved to organise this historic solidarity exercise. This event is a peaceful expression of appreciation for purposeful leadership and an opportunity for students to reaffirm their commitment to democratic participation, responsible citizenship and constructive engagement in public affairs,” he said.
The students’ leader commended the Convener of the movement, Armstrong ‘Tope Akintunde, for his commitment to youth and student development, educational advancement and political inclusion, noting that his leadership has inspired thousands of young people across Ogun State.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the movement’s Co-Convener, Hon. Odeneye, MHR, State Coordinator Hon. Olusegun Kaka and other apex leaders for their support in promoting youth participation and leadership development.
Opaleye praised Senator Adeola’s record in public service, citing his interventions in education, scholarship programmes, youth empowerment, infrastructure and human capital development.
He particularly referenced the senator’s recent bursary and scholarship initiative, through which 5,312 students in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education reportedly benefited.
He said the planned trek would serve as a voluntary expression of appreciation by students who believe good leadership deserves recognition while encouraging greater civic participation among young people.
The coordinator stressed that the exercise would be peaceful and urged participants to remain orderly, disciplined and law-abiding throughout the event.
He called on members of the YPM Students’ Wing, APC student members, student union leaders, undergraduates, postgraduates and supporters of progressive leadership across Ogun State to participate in the solidarity trek.
Opaleye reaffirmed the movement’s commitment to promoting quality education, youth development, good governance and active student participation in the state’s democratic process, while offering prayers for Senator Adeola’s continued wisdom, strength and good health.
