Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to resign from office if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in the FCT and Rivers State.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday during an engagement with members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja, where he also threw his weight behind Tinubu’s bid for a second term.
The minister said his ability to deliver electoral support for the President in the FCT would be a test of his political influence and justification for remaining in office.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said.
He added: “If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT.”
Wike also unveiled details of a political arrangement he said was being put together in the FCT to support candidates across different levels of government in the 2027 elections.
He endorsed Tinubu for president and former FCT Senator Philip Aduda for the Senate, while indicating that the alliance would also back candidates seeking election to the House of Representatives.
“Let us be clear on direction: for the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu! For the Senate, Philip Aduda is a man of the people,” he said.
According to Wike, the proposed political structure would bring together politicians and supporters from different parties in the FCT to work towards common electoral objectives.
“In the FCT, we are running a unified coalition across parties to deliver results,” the minister said.
The declaration comes as Wike continues his political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections. Although he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the former Rivers State governor has publicly aligned himself with Tinubu and supported the President’s re-election bid.
Beyond politics, Wednesday’s engagement also focused on issues affecting mechanics and traders in the Apo area.
Discussions included the prolonged process of relocating operators and resolving land-allocation issues within the Apo Mechanic Village corridor.
