The principal suspect in the gruesome murder of veteran broadcaster, Madam Olakitan Oyesiku, and her security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, has revealed why he and his accomplices allegedly carried out the killings.
Twenty-two-year-old Sodeinde Olajuwon Philip, a former security guard employed by the late Oyesiku, told investigators that he recruited two others to participate in the crime in order to “teach her a lesson” over what he described as poor remuneration during his time in her service.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Police Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, on the arrest of Philip and two other suspects linked to the killings.
CP Ojajuni identified the other suspects as Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola, 27, and Sobu Obafunsho, 36, who are currently in police custody.
According to the police chief, the case came to light on June 21, 2026, when officers at the Owode-Egba Police Station received a report of suspicious circumstances at Madam Oyesiku’s residence.
Detectives who responded to the scene discovered the lifeless body of security guard Pelumi Adetayo in the security post, while Madam Oyesiku was found dead in a pool of blood in the living room of her home.
Initial investigations revealed that the deceased’s Lexus RX 330 SUV was missing, raising suspicions of robbery and murder.
CP Ojajuni said the Command immediately launched an intensive investigation involving intelligence gathering and technical tracking.
“Within 24 hours, operatives traced and recovered the stolen vehicle at Onikolobo, Ogun State. Although the suspects had removed the ignition key and detached the number plates, detectives found the registration plate hidden beneath a seat, enabling them to confirm ownership of the vehicle,” he said.
A major breakthrough came from a handwritten note allegedly left at the crime scene. The note was subjected to forensic examination, generating crucial leads that helped investigators identify and track down the suspects.
The principal suspect, Philip, was arrested on June 24 at a construction site in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, where he was working as a labourer. Subsequent operations led to the arrest of his alleged accomplices, Ayoola and Obafunsho.
During interrogation, Philip reportedly confessed to planning and participating in the murders. He told investigators that he recruited the two other suspects because he harboured grievances against Madam Oyesiku from the period he worked as a security guard in her employment.
According to his statement, the objective of the attack was to “teach her a lesson.”
Police said the suspects carried out the crime on June 20. They allegedly first overpowered security guard Pelumi Adetayo and used him to gain access to the residence. After entering the house, they attacked and killed Madam Oyesiku before later murdering Adetayo.
The suspects then fled with the victim’s Lexus SUV, which was subsequently recovered by police.
Further searches linked to the suspects led to the recovery of several exhibits, including a broken hammer, a cutlass, a wooden plank, a black pen and other items believed to be connected to the crime.
While confirming that the suspects had made useful confessional statements, CP Ojajuni stressed that they remain entitled to due process under the law. He added that investigations were continuing to consolidate evidence and ensure diligent prosecution.
“The Ogun State Police Command remains committed to ensuring that justice is served and that all persons connected with this heinous crime are brought to book,” the Commissioner stated.
The double murder has shocked residents, with many awaiting the prosecution of the suspects as police conclude their investigation.
