President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, with pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across different ranks.
The salary review, announced in a State House press release on Tuesday, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel and takes effect from September 1, 2026.
Under the new structure, officers above the rank of colonel—including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Personnel from the rank of colonel down to warrant officer will get a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant will enjoy an 80 per cent pay rise.
The revised package will raise the annual military wage bill from N660 billion to N924 billion.
President Tinubu said the decision reflects his administration’s commitment to improving troop welfare in recognition of the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces in combating terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He also pledged continued investment in modernising the military through improved weapons, equipment and technology, stressing that security remains central to national development.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” Tinubu said.
He urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service, expressing confidence that the country would overcome its security challenges.
