Amid pomp and pageantry, the 67th Founders’ Day celebration of Akinorun Grammar School, Ikirun, brought together old students of the institution from different generations at the premises of the wave-making citadel of learning.
The grand reunion commenced on Friday, 8 May 2026, with a keep-fit walk tagged “Walk to Live” alongside a medical outreach programme aimed at promoting healthy living among participants.
It was indeed an exhilarating moment as current students of the school, popularly referred to as the “Greater Tomorrow” students, marched through major streets of Ikirun alongside distinguished alumni of the institution.
The exercise attracted admiration from residents of Ikirun, who cheered the participants and offered prayers for the old students, the younger generation, and the school which has, in no small measure, contributed immensely to the growth and development of the host community and the nation at large.
Delivering the keynote address, public communication expert and media aficionado, Dr Femi Adefila, MD/CEO of Rave 91.7 FM, presented a well-researched paper titled “Relationship Management: Benefits of Old Students’ Associations.”
He charged members not to focus solely on the enormous benefits derivable from belonging to old students’ associations, but also on the responsibilities attached to membership.
According to him, members must not only participate actively in the association’s programmes but also ensure prompt payment of annual dues and fulfilment of other financial obligations, stressing that without adequate support, there is little the association can achieve.
Drawing examples from the remarkable contributions of Ivy League institutions across the world and Nigeria’s Barewa College, which has produced five Heads of State, Dr Adefila noted that the benefits of active and meaningful participation in alumni activities are immeasurable. He further observed that in this era of globalisation and increasing individualism, old students’ associations remain one of the most structured, powerful, and enduring systems of relationship management.
In his remarks, the President of the AGSOSA National Body, Prof. Tunde Farombi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University, urged members to rise to the clarion call and rededicate themselves to efforts geared towards repositioning the school. He emphasised the need to sustain the high academic standards that have remained the hallmark of Akinorun Grammar School over the decades.
Highlights of the occasion included the presentation of awards, cultural displays, and a pledge by the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Dokun Olatunde, the prime -mover SEAP Holdings Nigeria LTD, to provide borehole and toilet facilities for the school.
