The Lagos State Police Command has identified and arrested an officer seen in a viral video making disparaging remarks about former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and people of Igbo extraction.
The officer, identified as Inspector Osumah Frank, was filmed while travelling on public transport making comments suggesting that neither Obi nor any person of Igbo descent could become President of Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 25, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola, said appropriate disciplinary proceedings had commenced against the officer in accordance with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the statement, the remarks attributed to Frank were made in his personal capacity and do not represent the position, views or official disposition of the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.
The command also reiterated its expectation that all police personnel conduct themselves with professionalism, civility and discipline while respecting members of the public.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, stressed that wearing the police uniform carries a responsibility to protect the dignity and integrity of the Force.
He further stated that the command would not tolerate conduct capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute or undermining public confidence in the institution.
