The Enugu State Police Command has arrested and detained a Police Inspector from the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad over the alleged killing of Okezie Mba, a traditional Ogene musician popularly known as ‘Igbo-Jah.’
The Daily Crucible reports that the musician was said to be leaving the premises after a friendly visit when the officer allegedly fired his rifle, fatally wounding him. Mba was rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. His body has been moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
But the seemingly inconsolable youths of the area have taken to yh the streets in Enugu, the capital of Coal City, protesting the alleged brutal shooting of Mba, a renowned Ogene musician Igbo Jah by a police officer from the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command.
The angry youths were said to have set bonfires in the Obiagu and Asata neighborhoods as a protest against the tragic incident.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said that the incident took place around 8:10 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters.
In the statement, DSP Ndukwe explained that while the motive behind the officer’s actions remains unclear, Enugu State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered an in-depth investigation into the matter.
“The Commissioner has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to lead a thorough investigation, promising swift and appropriate disciplinary action against the officer involved,” Ndukwe stated.
.Uzuegbu who expressed his condolences, described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, assuring the public that the police will hold the officer, and any others found complicit, fully accountable under the law.
He urged the victim’s family, friends, and associates to remain calm and cooperate with investigators to ensure justice is served.
