The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has dismissed claims that its structures have collapsed into the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the allegation as “cheap propaganda” aimed at creating a false impression of strength ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement signed by Afolabi Orekoya, the Ogun PDP said its structures remained intact across the state’s 20 local government areas, while accusing the ruling APC of attempting to divert attention from what it described as an exodus of prominent members from its ranks.
The opposition party said the APC’s claim that the PDP had collapsed was “fabricated and highly misleading,” arguing that recent political movements in the state showed the reverse was the case.
According to the PDP, “thousands” of APC members, grassroots mobilisers and political leaders had in recent months moved towards the opposition party.
The party cited the return of Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, a former senator representing Ogun Central, as one of the major developments in the ongoing realignment. It claimed that Obasanjo returned to the PDP alongside thousands of members from the APC and African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The PDP also listed Engr. Adeola Sodade, former Executive Secretary/CEO of the Ogun State Security Trust Fund; Hon. Lanre Sowunmi, a former Special Adviser to the governor; and Mrs. Bolanle Bankole, former coordinator of Okowo Dapo, among other political figures it said had left the ruling party.
The party further claimed that ward executives and grassroots mobilisers across Ogun’s three senatorial districts were also joining its fold.
“The ruling party will realize how empty their party is, then, it will be obvious which party structure has collapsed,” the statement said.
The PDP also pointed to what it described as growing support for its governorship candidate, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, citing the endorsement of prominent political figures, including former PDP State Chairman Chief Joju Fadairo.
The opposition party argued that the movement of political figures into its ranks contradicted the APC’s narrative of a collapsing PDP structure.
“You cannot claim the opposition is collapsing while your own foundation is crumbling and your top leaders are walking out the door,” the party said.
The PDP urged Ogun residents and its supporters to disregard what it called APC-sponsored media propaganda, while inviting citizens dissatisfied with the current administration to join the party’s campaign to “rescue and rebuild” the state.
The APC’s reported claims and the PDP’s allegations could not be independently verified from the statement alone.
The latest exchange, however, underscores the intensifying political contest in Ogun State as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
