The Ogun State Government has distributed manual and electronic wheelchairs to learners with mobility challenges across the state as part of activities marking the 2026 International Wheelchairs Day.
The mobility aids were presented at the Daniel Akintonde Model School for Children with Special Needs in Abeokuta, with beneficiaries drawn from the five special needs schools as well as public primary and secondary schools across the state.
Speaking during the event, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu, said the state government had sustained annual donations of wheelchairs and white canes to support learners living with disabilities.
According to him, more than 500 mobility tools have been distributed since the inception of the current administration.
Arigbabu described the intervention as part of the government’s commitment to improving teaching and learning conditions for children with special needs.
He assured that more inclusive programmes would be introduced to enhance their comfort and sense of belonging.
“If someone is brilliant and with good aspirations, but having one impediment or the other, achieving such aspirations may seem difficult. That is why the governor has made it his habit to do everything possible to make life easier for them,” he said.
The commissioner also commended the Saka Matemilola for renovating and equipping the school’s hall and hostels with modern facilities.
