Nine people have been killed in a fatal road traffic crash involving a commercial bus and a truck along the Ijebu – Ode corridor of Sagamu – Ore expressway.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command in a statement Monday night through Chief Route Commander and Sector Public Education Officer,
FRSC Ogun State Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi. said the crash occurred at about 4:55 p.m. at the Bethel area within the Ijebu-Ode Unit Command.
According to the FRSC, the vehicles involved were a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus, with registration number 14B-299DT, belonging to Delta Line, and a white Sino Truck commercial vehicle, with registration number AAB162XD, belonging to Bill Gas Solution Ltd.
The nine victims comprised three males and six females, all of whom died in the crash.
The FRSC said the crash occurred during rainfall, leaving the road pavement wet. Preliminary investigation identified speed violation as the probable cause of the accident.
The agency said its rescue team arrived at the scene at about 4:58 p.m., just two minutes after receiving the report.
The bodies of the victims were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police Motor Traffic Division.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise caution while driving during rainfall.
Ogunjobi advised motorists to obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances and avoid dangerous driving practices, stressing that speeding on wet roads increases the risk of losing control of a vehicle because of reduced tyre grip and visibility.
The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged all road users to make safety a priority.
