The National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Hon. Waliat Folasade Adeyemo, to commence immediate remedial work on the dilapidated Camp Osiele Road or risk a total shutdown of the route by students.
The ultimatum was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the National Senate President of NAOSS, Comrade Olabode Tayo Opeyemi, according to the Daily Sun.
The association described the Camp Osiele Road as being in a state of total collapse for several months, lamenting that the road had become almost impassable, thereby subjecting students, residents, traders, motorists and other road users to untold hardship.
According to the students’ body, the deplorable condition of the road has led to frequent accidents, prolonged delays, and repeated damage to vehicles plying the route.
NAOSS expressed disappointment that repeated appeals and complaints to the Odeda Local Government Chairman had failed to attract any meaningful response or intervention.
“We note with disappointment that several appeals and complaints to the office of the Odeda Local Government Chairman have yielded no meaningful action or solution,” the statement said.
The association, therefore, demanded that the council chairman commence immediate remedial work and present a concrete plan to address the road crisis within 72 hours of the release of the statement.
It warned that failure to comply with the demand would leave students with no option but to embark on a peaceful protest by shutting down the road.
“Failure to act within 72 hours will leave us with no other option than to mobilise Ogun State students to shut down the road. During this period, nobody will be allowed to pass until urgent steps are taken to fix the road,” the statement added.
While stressing that it had no desire to disrupt public peace, NAOSS maintained that the prolonged neglect of the road had become unbearable.
“The suffering of the people has gone on for too long. Government exists to serve the people, and we demand that service now,” the association stated.
NAOSS also called on the Ogun State Government, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to intervene promptly to prevent the situation from escalating.
