American filmmaker, actor, playwright and producer Tyler Perry has revealed that he has no plans to get married, saying his concerns are less about marriage itself and more about the financial consequences of divorce.
Perry made the revelation while appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where he explained that marriage does not bother him but the possibility of a costly divorce does.
“It’s not the marriage that bothers me. It’s the divorce,” Perry said.
The 57 – year old filmmaker has an estimated net worth of $1.4billion and apparently worried by the fate some married but divorced couples, said that he has seen people who were financially successful lose much of what they had following divorce.
“Everybody that I know that did well and went broke, it was because of a divorce, so I’m good just being free,” he said.
Perry’s comments highlight his decision to remain unmarried, based largely on what he says he has observed happen to others after their marriages ended.
The filmmaker, best known for creating the Madea franchise, has previously spoken publicly about relationships and fatherhood. His latest comments have since drawn attention, particularly for his candid view of the financial risks he associates with marriage and divorce.
