A female operative of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) attached to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos has been caught on camera demanding N5000 bribe from a man – a traveller.
The man who is believed to be discretely armed with a bugging device, captured the transaction including the face of the female operative.
The traveller can be heard saying he cannot give her that amount of money and attempted to offer N1000 which she refused.
The traveller was again heard telling the lady and her colleague that he was flying with Turkish Airlines and had some time to while away, and not ready to part with an amount more than the N1000.
The lady operative attempted to impound the traveller’s baggage, but the man resisted it.
However, the NCS has reacted to the trending video, admitting that the operative allegedly involved in the inappropriate request is its member.
The NCS added that it was already investigating the case.
This was contained in statement on Tuesday by the National Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada.
Maiwada explained that preliminary investigation had revealed that the incident transpired at the New Terminal within the departure hall of MMA Lagos, and was captured on video by the involved passenger.
“The recording reveals an inappropriate request for ₦5000 in exchange for expeditious processing of customs procedures. We wish to confirm that the Officer implicated is indeed a member of the Nigeria Customs Service, properly assigned to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Area Command. The NCS strongly condemns this unprofessional conduct and is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
“A comprehensive investigation is underway to scrutinize the incident thoroughly, and appropriate actions will be taken. Such behaviour is entirely inconsistent with the core values of our service, and we are resolute in maintaining a transparent and accountable customs operation.
He urged the public to report any instances of misconduct or corruption promptly, explaining that these reports are crucial in upholding the integrity of its service and ensuring that officers adhere to the highest ethical standards.
“The NCS is unwavering in its commitment to fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. The outcome of the investigation will be communicated to the public at the earliest opportunity,” he concluded.
