Youth groups in Delta South have called for better representation in 2027, insisting that the future of the senatorial district depends on “a rigorously vocal, vibrant and honest lawmaker.”
The youths also described the ambition of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Delta South, Dr. Austin Orette, as the best possible path for the district ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Dr. Austin Orette’s ambition is clearly not about personal gain. It is about serving the good people of Delta South,” they stated.
At a meeting attended on Friday by representatives of various youth groups in the district, the youths applauded Orette for what they described as his strong legislative and administrative qualities.
“Dr. Austin Orette is a resourceful and persistent organiser. He is open to new ideas,” they said.
The groups unveiled what they described as an extensive development agenda for Delta South, including accelerated execution of federal projects in the district, low-interest loans to support local businesses, budget stability, unemployment benefits, sound monetary policies and the pursuit of a new constitution.
According to them, Orette’s agenda is focused on tackling insecurity, despair and the growing feelings of helplessness and dependence among the people.
The leader of the Delta South Youth Movement (DSYM), Amos Ebiakpo, read the statement to journalists in Warri, praising Orette’s development blueprint.
“Dr. Austin Orette will lobby effectively in the corridors of power, create jobs, improve roads and schools, develop parks and clear waterways. He will also facilitate the construction of hospitals, gas and power plants, sewage systems, dams and canals, as well as reclamation, irrigation, flood control projects, bridges, docks and tunnels,” Ebiakpo said.
The youths also criticised those advocating continuity in the district, describing such calls as misguided.
“They should abandon the dream of a second term,” the statement read.
The groups further declared that they would not support the ruling party or groups promoting what they termed “the old order.”
“Backing the incumbent or any member of the ruling party in the district can only prolong the agony of the people of Delta South,” they added.
