The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun no doubt deserves a hearty congratulations on his new status as the chairman of the Southern Governors forum in Nigeria.
However, it is succinct to say that Dapo Abiodun, the newly elected Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum, is facing a crucial test of his leadership and integrity at this time.
The Prince Court Estate controversy in Ogun State has raised serious questions about his government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and fairness. As the chairman of the regional body, Abiodun’s handling of this issue will have far-reaching implications for his reputation, the credibility of the Ogun State government, and the trust of the people.
The Prince Court Estate saga began three years ago when over 200 qualified applicants paid for houses in the government housing scheme. Despite fulfilling their part of the bargain, they have been left without allocation, sparking allegations of fraud, arm-twisting, and cheating. The applicants are accusing the government of abandoning its responsibility, delaying allocation, and now attempting to increase the price of the houses or refund.

Like a listening government and with so much pressures from here and there, a list containing 110 names to be allocated houses out of the 235 qualified applicants was released. The Government was praised and commended for this act. However, the joy did not last as those allocated houses were given what they termed a ‘proviso’ to add the sum of three million five hundred thousand naira only (₦3, 500,000) to the already paid money, failure of which the allocation would be forfeited within 60 days. Of course that ‘proviso’ was not publicised by the government, like when the allocation was made.
