The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has declared Mrs. Adebunmi Adekanbi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the councillorship bye-election conducted on Saturday, September 20, 2025, in Ward 1, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Announcing the results, the Electoral Officer for the Council area, Barr. Ademola Akinyele, confirmed that Mrs. Adekanbi polled 1,873 votes to defeat her closest rival from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 351 votes. She was accordingly returned elected.
The bye-election followed the death of the incumbent Councillor, Hon. Olayinka Adekanbi, and was contested by candidates from 10 political parties, including the APC, PDP, Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Alliance (AA), and others. Voting took place across 36 polling units.
Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, representing Ogun West Senatorial District, who cast his vote at Polling Unit 009, UAMC Primary School 1, Eleja Pahayi, commended the peaceful atmosphere of the election. He lauded the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration for ensuring a transparent and credible exercise, while also extending condolences to the Adekanbi family.
Similarly, the State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Olaolu Olabimtan, who voted at his polling unit in State Hospital, GRA, Ilaro, praised OGSIEC for what he described as a flawless electoral process. He noted the impressive turnout of voters and expressed confidence that Mrs. Adekanbi would sustain her late husband’s legacy of service to the community.
In her acceptance speech, the Councillor-elect expressed gratitude to the people of Yewa South, the APC leadership, and Governor Abiodun for their support and loyalty. She pledged to uphold the good name of her late husband and to serve the ward with dedication.
Speaking on behalf of the OGSIEC Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Osibodu, the Commissioner for Legal Affairs, Mrs. Remilekun Olaopa, thanked the electorate for their peaceful conduct and discipline at the polling units. She described the bye-election as a model of transparency and credibility.
The exercise has since been widely commended for its orderly conduct, massive turnout, and free, fair, and transparent process, further strengthening confidence in grassroots democracy in Ogun State.
