Less than 24 hours after multiple vehicles accident left five people dead and 10 others gravely injured on Wednesday at the NASFAST stretch of the Lagos – Ibadan expressway, five other people have died in a fresh auto crash that occurred on the same Ogun State corridor of Lagos – Ibadan expressway.
The Chief Route Commander and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Public Education Officer, Florence Okpe, who disclosed this on behalf of the Ogun State Commander of the FRSC, Anthony Uga, on Thursday.
While the Thursday crash occurred in the afternoon, on Lagos-Ibadan expressway around FIDIWO bridge at about 14.48pm and involved 09 persons ( 06 female adult and 03 male adult), the Wednesday accident occurred at about 09.56am, involved a total of 15 persons and three vehicles with registration numbers KUT561ZZ (Daf Truck), GGE84YF (Toyota bus) and unmarked Man diesel truck.
On Thursday incident, Okpe stated: “The Command carried out rescue operation on Lagos-Ibadan expressway around FIDIWO bridge at about 1448hrs
The crash involved 09 persons ( 06 female adult and 03 male adult) and a total of 04 persons were injured while 05 persons lost their lives from the crash ( 03 female adult and 02 male adult),02 vehicles were involved with registration numbers MUS191HA a Prime bus red colour and a Toyota Camry car AKD754BG gold colour.
Probable causes of the crash were wonderful overtaking, Speed and Tyre bust which led to lose of control and veer – off the road.
“The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere while the corpses were deposited at FOS MORGUE IPARA
“The Sector Commander FRSC Ogun Sector Command CC ANTHONY UGA reiterated on speed violation among motorists being observed that speed has been a major cause of RTC on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. He further opined that Driver should not turn the Highway to a race course because the roads are in good condition. He advised motorists to have a change of attitude towards driving in order to safe lives.
“He commiserated with the family of the crash victims.”
However, she attributed the cause the cause of yesterday’s accident to dangerous driving on the part of one of the trucks who made a sudden U-turn without any indication to alert the truck coming from the rear.
According to Okpe, this led to loss of control by the truck and bus, and attendant accident.
“A total of 15 people were involved which comprised of 11 male adult and 04 female adult. 10 were seriously injured ( 06 male and 04 female adult) and 05 persons were killed from the multiple crash.( 05 male adult).
“The injured victims were taken to famobi Hospital Mowe while the corpses were deposited at Idera Hospital morgue Sagamu,” she stated.
She quoted Anthony Uga as cautioning motorists on speed and reckless driving, warning that any driver involved in a crash that claim lives will be prosecuted forthwith to serve as deterrent to others
