Barely five hours after a purported visit by some individuals to Otunba Segun Showunmi, a former spokesman of Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the build up to the 2019 Presidential election, with a promise of governorship offer from the Ogun State chapter of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), the party has swiftly come out to disown the said visit and those behind it.
The Daily Crucible reports that during the said visit, the guests allegedly acting as representatives of the Ogun ADP made a governorship offer to Otunba Showunmi, who was a governorship aspirant on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023.
However, Ogun ADP on Monday evening said that there was never any approval by the party.for a promise or offer of governorship slot ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement jointly signed by Chief Olanrewaju Sokunbi (Leader), Alhaji Tajudeen Durosimi (State Secretary), and other state executives, the party described the visit as “fraudulent, unauthorized and against the constitution of the Action Democratic Party.”
“Our attention was drawn to a fraudulent visitation by some individuals claiming to represent ADP Ogun State,” the statement said.
“We reiterate that the ADP did not authorize any approach to Segun Showunmi for governorship consideration or party membership.”
The party leaders stressed that the alleged action was not only misleading but carried out without due process.
“The state chairperson acted without the authority of the state working committee and the state leadership, thus running foul of the constitution of our party,” the statement added.
According to the ADP, the meeting was organised by a certain Hassan, whom they described as unauthorized.
“One Hassan who arranged the meeting is not authorized to do so and the state chairperson will face disciplinary action,” the party declared.
The leadership warned Segun Showunmi, who is currently a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to disregard the overture.
“We hereby notify Otunba. Segun Showunmi not to be deceived by this fraudulent visitation. He is a card-carrying member of the PDP and not an ADP member,” the statement emphasized.
Concluding, the party disassociated itself completely from the reported offer. “We hereby state clearly that the Ogun ADP dissociates itself from the purported request and no such endorsement was approved at any level,” it said.
The development comes shortly after Labour Party (LP) leaders in Ogun State reportedly wooed Showunmi with the possibility of a governorship ticket.
The ADP visit, which has now been disowned, was initially presented as part of an effort to draw him into the party for the 2027 governorship race.
