Nigerian music star Davido has revealed that he plans to reclaim ownership of his music catalogue from Sony Music and pass royalty-generating songs to his children before retiring from the entertainment industry.
The award-winning singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, made the revelation during a recent appearance on The Long Form Podcast, where he discussed the significance of artists understanding and controlling the business aspects of their careers.
According to Davido, ownership remains one of the most valuable assets an artist can possess in today’s music industry. While acknowledging that he currently has a favorable recording agreement, the Afrobeats superstar stressed that having full control of his master recordings is his ultimate goal.
The singer explained that his desire to reclaim his music rights is driven by a long-term vision for his family. He said he intends to pass the ownership of portions of his catalogue to his children, allowing them to continue benefiting from royalties generated by his music long after he steps away from the spotlight.
“I have a good music contract. But the most important thing is ownership. I plan to get my masters back from Sony soon. With that, I can give each of my kids songs they will keep earning royalties from even after I retire,” Davido said.
His comments highlight the growing emphasis on music ownership among artists, many of whom are increasingly seeking greater control over their creative works and long-term earnings.
