Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has ordered the immediate reversal of the suspension slammed on two head teachers after a viral video exposed the poor condition of a classroom in the state.
The teachers had earlier been suspended indefinitely by the Ebonyi State Ministry of Education following the circulation of a video showing pupils receiving lessons while seated on a bare floor in a dilapidated classroom.
The ministry accused the affected head teachers of gross misconduct, denying pupils access to quality education, and allegedly sabotaging the state government’s efforts in the education sector. They were also directed to hand over all government property in their possession.
However, amid widespread criticism and backlash from Nigerians on social media, Governor Nwifuru stepped in and ordered that the suspension be lifted.
In a statement issued on Thursday, May 21, by the governor’s Special Assistant on New Media, Leo Oketa, it was disclosed that the governor’s attention had been drawn to both the viral video and the disciplinary action taken against the teachers.
The statement said Governor Nwifuru directed the immediate reinstatement of the head teachers, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of teachers and pupils, as well as the improvement of learning conditions in schools across Ebonyi State.
