Former Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and presidential hopeful under the platform of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed the decision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to investigate the disappearance of social media activist, Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Saturday, Kwankwaso described the directive as a “decisive and long-overdue action,” expressing optimism that the investigation would uncover the truth behind the activist’s disappearance.
The former governor of Kano State who leads a vibrant Kwankwasiyya Movement said that since Dadiyata was abducted in 2019, he and his associates had consistently called for a thorough investigation and justice for those responsible.
Kwankwaso urged the police authorities to place the officers named in the allegations under close watch to prevent any interference with the investigation. He also appealed to the government to compensate Dadiyata’s family for the emotional trauma they have endured over the years.
The former governor further praised civil society organisations and concerned Nigerians for sustaining pressure on the authorities over the case. He specifically commended Kano-based lawyer, Abba Hikima Fagge, whose petition reportedly led to the IGP’s directive.
Dadiyata, a lecturer and outspoken social media commentator believed to be a supporter of Kwankwaso, was abducted from his residence in Barnawa, Kaduna, in August 2019 by unidentified persons. Nearly seven years later, his whereabouts remain unknown.
On Friday, the IGP directed the Police Monitoring Unit to investigate allegations made by Muhammad Musa Kamarawa, a former aide to Bello Matawalle.
Kamarawa had alleged that two police officers — CSP Hussaini Gimba and CSP Hassan Gimba — claimed responsibility for the killing of Dadiyata and another man, Saminu S/Fada Gusau, during operations in Kaduna.
