Popular Nigerian content creator Emmanuel Obruste, widely known as GehGeh, has broken his silence following public accusations from his younger sister, who alleged that he abandoned his family despite his rising success.
The controversy erupted after his sister claimed she was sidelined and even turned away from GehGeh’s housewarming ceremony, sparking a wave of backlash from Nigerians on social media who accused the influencer of neglect.
Responding in a video shared on his Instagram page, GehGeh pushed back firmly, insisting that his financial reality has been misunderstood.
“I never get the kind of money wey fit raise family from poverty. I can only do my best and not my all,” he said.
Defending his record, GehGeh recounted instances where he had supported his family, including buying the phone his sister currently uses. He, however, maintained that there must be limits, urging his siblings to become self-reliant.
“I no go help anybody in this life to the point wey be say I go con later need help from them. I will not do it. I will give my best not my all. See, I wicked ooo. Yes I wicked. Na wickedness carries me reach this level,” he stated.
The influencer doubled down on his stance, describing his approach to money as intentional and necessary for survival.
“I’m very wicked with my money. I wouldn’t have gotten to this level if I kept giving money to everyone that asked for help.”
Drawing comparisons with music star Asake, GehGeh argued that even established celebrities take time before extending large-scale financial support to family members.
“Asake don blow for over four years now as an international super star, but na this year he bought cars for his parents. I started earning money from social media two years ago and you expect me to just carry my full family wey don poor in history,” he said.
Highlighting the weight of expectations placed on him as the first successful member of his family, GehGeh stressed that he cannot single-handedly lift everyone out of poverty overnight.
“Bro, in the history of my family. I’m the only one that has seen light. And you dey expect that as I see the light, make I just carry everybody once from poverty?”
He also called out what he described as dependency among his siblings.
“Make I con get one sister wey no wan work. My advice to my brother and sister is that they should go and work, don’t depend on me. I get family with three children to take care of.”
Reaffirming his position, he concluded: “I’m applying strategy over emotions because I never get the kind of money to raise family from poverty… In such a family, you just want me to elevate everyone?”
