By Mick Oseji, Asaba The Delta State Police Command has ordered the summary trial of two officers captured in a viral video allegedly extorting money from a motorist using a Point of Sale (POS) machine inside a police station in Asaba. The Command described the incident, which reportedly occurred on January 13, 2026, at the ‘C’ Division, Asaba, as “embarrassing, unprofessional, and conduct unbecoming of police officers,” stressing that no citizen deserves such treatment. In a press release issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the immediate commencement of orderly room trial for the officers involved—Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim. The statement noted that the CP strongly aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which prohibits extortion and the use of POS machines or any electronic payment platforms within police formations. He emphasized that no officer is authorized to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise. “Their actions are inexcusable and unpardonable,” the statement read, adding that the outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public upon conclusion. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, CP Oyeniyi warned that extortion and abuse of office will not be tolerated under his leadership. He charged officers to uphold professionalism and respect the fundamental human rights of citizens in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The Commissioner further stated that the action taken against the erring officers would serve as a deterrent to others, while appreciating members of the public for bringing the incident to the attention of the Command. He also encouraged citizens to report cases of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit via the designated hotlines, assuring that the Command remains committed to discipline, accountability, and restoring public trust.
