The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has given insight into how 12 passengers in a Mazda bus were burnt to death at the Ogun State corridor of Lagos – Ibadan expressway.
The FRSC sector command for the state said the accident which occurred some minutes after 3p.m on Tuesday, involved a lone Mazda bus conveying 16 people.
The Corps added that following wrongful overtaking by the driver and attendant loss of control, the bus ploughed into the road divider, bursting into flames immediately it fell due to the impact of hitting a concrete structure.
The raging fire kîlled a dozen out of the 16 people which comprised of 12 male adults, 03 female adults and a female child.
The baby also perished in the fire.
However, four male passengers escaped with injuries.

FRSC Public Education Officer, Florence Okpe, who disclosed this on behalf of the Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, said: “Rescue operation was carried out Tuesday, 13th August, 2024, by a team from FRSC Ogere Unit Command on a crash that occurred at about 1514hrs
“The crash involved 1(one) vehicle with the following details;
White Mazda Bus with registration number DDA733XA
“Total number of people were 16 which comprised of 12 male adult, 03 female adult and 01 female child.04 Male passengers were injured in the crash and rescued while the other 12 persons were burnt to death.
“The injured victims were taken to Patmag Hospital, Ogere.
“The suspected cause of the lone crash was wrongful overtaking by the bus driver, which led to loss of control and the bus hitting the road divider at the middle of the road. The bus fell and was engulfed in flames immediately.
“The Sector Commander, Ogun Sector Command, CC Akinwunmi Fasakin, is pained over the recklessness of some motorists on the highway, who refuse to obey traffic rules. He urged motorists to maintain the stipulated speed on the highway and also ensure a clear road before overtaking. He further commiserate with the crash victims and wish them quick recovery.”
