Motorists on Tuesday expressed shock as petroleum otherwise known Premium Motor Spirit(PMS) dealers in Ogun State jacked up the pump price of from N500 to between N580 to N700 per litre.
The increase by the Independent and Major marketers respectively followed the adjustment of the pump price from N515 to N617 by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
Checks reveals that fuel was dispensed at N700 per litre by the Independent Marketers in few filling stations in Abeokuta, the state capital, while the Major marketers who have the product dispensed it at N580 per litre.
The sudden increase forced the inter – state transport fare to go up astronomically while the intra – state transporters also charged their passengers more.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) has kicked against the increased pump price of petrol to N617, saying the development remains unaccepted to Nigerians.
The information and public affairs of the NLC, Comrade Benson Upah that the increase poses a significant threat to the socio-economic well-being of the citizenry, their businesses, incomes and livelihood.
According to the Leadership newspaper reports, the labour centre urged the federal government to retrace its steps from the journey of possibly driving fuel towards N1,000 per liter.
He said the congress is yet to be convinced how development is helpful to the people or the economy or how it renews the hope of the people.
He said, “This increment is unacceptable to us at the Congress because it poses a significant threat to the socio-economic well-being of the citizenry, their businesses, incomes, livelihood, everything!
“We had said earlier that no reasonable government acting reasonably, leaves its national currency entirely to the storms of the Market as this could lead to unintended consequences.”
