Nigeria’s democracy has been a subject of debate and concern for many years. Despite being touted as the best means of electing leaders, the process has been severely compromised, leading to the emergence of leaders who are more interested in personal gains than in serving the people.

In Nigeria, the political system has been bastardized to the point where the wrong people are now leading the country. People who are bereft of ideas and lack the level of competence and integrity needed by a good leader to function effectively and efficiently. It’s a sad reality where the worst have taken over and the best are either marginalized or excluded from the process. The phrase “when the best is not available, the available becomes the best” has become a harsh reality in Nigeria’s politics.

As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and many State Governors approach their second year in office, it is essential to assess their performance and the state of Nigeria’s democracy. Have they protected the general well-being of Nigerian citizens as enshrined in the law of the land? The answer is a resounding NO.

The current state of Nigeria’s democracy is a far cry from the ideals of democracy. The system has been hijacked by individuals who are more interested in personal gains than in serving the people. As we know, no one can attain any political position without a political party putting the person forward. The emergence of such leader is often based on factors such as party loyalty, wealth and influence, rather than merit, integrity and competence. Thus whoever the political party brings forward becomes the party’s candidate.

The consequences of this are far-reaching. Leaders who lack the necessary skills, experience and vision are elected into office, and they often prioritize their personal interests over the needs of the people. This has led to a lack of progress and development in many areas, including education, healthcare, infrastructure and security.

Moreover, the political system has become a breeding ground for corruption, nepotism and cronyism. Leaders are more interested in rewarding their loyalists and supporters than in serving the people. This has created a culture of impunity, where those in power feel they are above the law and can do as they please.

The people of Nigeria are suffering as a result of this dysfunctional democracy. Many are struggling to make ends meet and the country’s infrastructure is in shambles. The economy is stagnant, and corruption is rampant. The security situation is dire and many Nigerians live in fear of their lives.

President Bola Tinubu should prioritize reforming the security agencies, enhancing intelligence gathering, and ensuring effective collaboration between security forces. His government should implement policies that would promote investment, reduce unemployment and stimulate economic growth. Additionally, investing in infrastructure development such as roads, bridges and power supply, will help to facilitate economic activity and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.

On the other hand, Governors should focus on improving access to quality education and healthcare services, particularly in rural areas. Governors should also invest in rural infrastructure, such as roads, water supply and electricity, to enhance the quality of life for rural dwellers. Furthermore, they should implement policies that promote agriculture, entrepreneurship and small business development to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in their respective states. By working together, the President and governors can drive development, improve the economy, and enhance the well-being of Nigerians.

Meanwhile, It is time for Nigerians to demand better from their leaders. We need a new breed of leaders who are committed to serving the people, not just their personal interests. We need leaders who are patriotic, visionary, competent and honest. We need leaders who will prioritize the needs of the people over their own interests and have the zeal to work the system.

As we celebrate the second year anniversary of President Tinubu’s administration and many Governors, it is essential to reflect on the state of Nigeria’s democracy. We must demand accountability, transparency and good governance from our leaders. We must insist on leaders who are committed to serving the people, not just their personal interests.

Nigeria’s democracy may have failed us so far, but it’s not too late to make a change. We can start by demanding better from our leaders, supporting institutions that promote good governance and advocating for electoral reforms that will lead to the emergence of better leaders. The future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on it.
