A 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after succumbing to injuries she sustained in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before she was due to celebrate her graduation.
Adaobi, a final-year student at Kharkiv National Medical University, was critically injured on June 29 when Russian forces reportedly dropped aerial bombs on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv, one of the country’s most heavily targeted cities.
She was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for specialist care. Despite days of intensive medical efforts, she died on Sunday, July 5.
Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief among classmates, lecturers and friends, who remembered her as a brilliant young woman whose lifelong dream of becoming a doctor was cruelly cut short by the war.
In a heartfelt tribute, Kharkiv National Medical University described Adaobi as “a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person” who was admired for her dedication to learning and her passion for helping others.
“She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others,” the university said.
The institution added that although doctors in Ukraine and later Germany fought tirelessly to save her, her injuries proved fatal.
According to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, medical teams battled to keep her alive until the very end, while expressing condolences to her family and loved ones.
Adaobi had been studying medicine at the university since 2020 and had built an impressive academic record. During her training, she completed internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University, reflecting her commitment to excellence in the medical profession.
In a heartbreaking twist, Adaobi and her close friend, Fatima Huseynova, were reportedly on their way to a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike struck.
Fatima died instantly at the scene, while Adaobi was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said at least 12 other people were injured in the attack.
For Adaobi’s family, friends and colleagues, what should have been a week of celebration has instead become one of mourning. Rather than watching her walk across the graduation stage in a white coat, they are left remembering a promising young doctor whose ambition to save lives ended amid the devastation of war.
