Outrage and fear have gripped Ozoro Kingdom following disturbing accounts from women and girls who say they were raped, molested, and assaulted during a community festival that has now drawn nationwide condemnation.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday in the Isoko North Local Government headquarters, where what should have been a cultural celebration allegedly descended into chaos and abuse. Victims and eyewitnesses described a terrifying atmosphere in which groups of youths targeted women seen outdoors, forcibly attacking and harassing them.

Traditionally, women and girls are expected to remain indoors during certain hours of the festival. However, residents say there was no prior announcement, sensitisation, or official guidance from community leaders this year—leaving many unaware and exposed to danger.

A youth involved in rescuing some victims recounted scenes of panic and helplessness, calling on authorities to act swiftly. “This cannot be swept under the carpet,” he said, urging the Delta State Government, local authorities, and security agencies to ensure justice for the victims.

Public anger intensified after viral videos surfaced online, allegedly showing young men celebrating after stripping a woman naked. The footage has fueled claims by residents that the event has become a so-called “rape festival,” creating widespread fear and forcing many women indoors to avoid being attacked.        Sources within the community alleged multiple cases of sexual assault, raising concerns particularly for female students of Delta State University and visitors unfamiliar with the risks associated with the period.

Reacting to the reports, the Delta State Police Command, through its spokesperson Edafe Bright, confirmed the incident and described the acts as “barbaric, unacceptable, and a gross violation of human rights.”

The Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has ordered a full investigation, assuring that perpetrators will be identified and prosecuted.

“This is alarming, disgusting and embarrassing,” the police spokesperson said, calling on witnesses to come forward with useful information.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Isoko North Local Government, Godwin Ogorugba, condemned the assaults as “inhumane and barbaric,” vowing that those responsible would face justice.

While acknowledging cases of molestation and harassment, he denied confirmed reports of rape, stating that some individuals exploited the festival to perpetrate criminal acts.

Ogorugba stressed that the incident lacked official approval from community leadership, describing it as a disgrace that contradicts the values and traditions of the Isoko people. He added that security agencies are already analysing circulating videos to identify the culprits.

The Delta State Government also weighed in, condemning the incident in strong terms. Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the government was deeply disturbed by reports of harassment and sexual violence linked to the festival.

“Cultural celebrations must never be used as a cover for criminality,” Aniagwu said, calling on security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice and urging community leaders to enforce safety measures during such events.

As investigations continue, residents say the incident has left a deep scar on the community, with many women traumatised and fearful. Civil society groups and concerned Nigerians are now demanding accountability, justice for victims, and urgent reforms to ensure that cultural traditions are never again exploited to violate human dignity.
