Nigerians have been advised to make elected political office holders accountable, by asking questions and probing into their activities to measure their performance and know how they have been able to represent them towards ensuring development in the country.
A community leader and the House of Representatives candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Abeokuta South Federal Constituency at the 2023 general elections, Chief Toyin Amuzu gave the advice on Wednesday as Muslims celebrate eid-el-fitr, to mark the end of Ramadan.
Chief Amuzu, who thanked Allah for His mercies and benevolence, urged Muslims not to go back to habits forsaken during the Ramadan.
He said, while the spirit of piety, obedience, sacrifice and love as major lessons of eid-el-fitr must be imbibed by both followers and leaders, political office holders have a greater burden to be responsive and responsible to the people they are leading.
The Egba Chief called on government to as a matter of urgency find a lasting solution to the increase in prices of basic needs especially food and medicines as Nigerians are groaning in pains and hunger.
According to Chief Amuzu, “the concept of leadership is being eroded these days. They are not holding positions for funfair or to enjoy the perks of office but to work and create solutions to the myriad of problems confronting us as a people. They must lead us to achieve goals, take us to a better place, motivate us, create an enabling environment, formulate good policies to protect our general well-being and give us feedback among other roles.
“The followers must not be passive or show unconcerned attitude to those representing them as this would spell doom for the Nation”.
Chief Amuzu urged all Nigerians to be united and be prayerful so that the country will continue to be one indivisible entity despite the security and economic challenges facing the nation.
The Asiwaju-Leragun Egba, prayed for the good of Nigeria, Ogun State and Abeokuta South local government, saying ” we would witness the greatness of Nigeria in our lifetime”.
