IJEBU-ODE:The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, and his Remo counterpart, Oba Adewale Ajayi, have inaugurated separate implementation committees to ensure the constitutional approval of the proposed Ijebu State.
The two committees are expected to be harmonised into one after each has completed its assignment with report from both merged into one as well.
A highly placed source close to the Awujale said, “Arising from the communique reached at the end of Ijebu Stakeholders Meetings held on Dec 19th 2024, towards the collective desires of all Ijebus/Remos to creating a New State of old Ijebu Province out of the present Ogun State, Alayeluwa Oba S.K. Adetona, GCON, Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, has formally approved the membership and inaugurated the committee with Chief Chris Olufunmilola Okunowo (Bobasuwa II of Ijebuland) as the Chairman of the Implementation Committee.
“Other members are:
– Otunba Alex Gbenga Onabanjo (Member)
– Senator Gbenga Kaka (Member)
– Otunba Deji Osibogun (Member)
– Otunba Biodun Onanuga (Member)
– Omoba Bambo Adesanya SAN (Member)
– Chief (Prof) Adetokunbo Fassy Yusuf (Member).
– Prof Segun Awonusi (Member)
– Akogun Kola Onadipe (Member/Technical Adviser)
– Prof Jumoke Awoderu (Secretary).
“The Terms of Reference (ToF) for the Implementation Committee are:
(a) To advocate for a new State to be calved out from Ogun State within the current geographical territory now known as Ogun East Senatorial District which is made up of nine(9) LGs as follows:
– Sagamu LG
– Ikenne LG
– Remo North LG
– Odogbolu LG
– Ikebuode LG
– Ijebu North East LG
– Ijebu East LG
– Ijebu North LG
– Ogun Waterside LG
(b) To educate and enlighten all peoples residing in these LGs of their civic rights and duties-individually and collectively, of the socio-economic and political advantages of the new State.
(c) To embark on necessary and appropriate advocacy strategies – media, cultural/traditional, educational and community endorsements via public and private sector engagements.
(d) To organise definite public supports via conferences, seminars, workshops, dedicated gathering sessions, for the new State towards statutory acceptance endorsements within:
– members residing within the Ogun East Senatorial Districts
– members of NASS from Ogun East Senatorial District.
– members of the Ogun State House of Assembly and 25 other State Houses of Assemblies.
– And any other assignment as to be firmed out by His Royal Majesty The Awujale of Ijebuland.
“A formal inaugural meeting of the Committee took place in Ijebuode, on Sunday Feb 09/2025, with the Awujale Oba S.K Adetona and Senator Gbenga Daniel both in attendance, while Chief Sunny Kuku-Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuode was recognised as a respected Resource Fellow to the Project.
“In the same vein, Alayeluwa Oba Adewale Ajayi; CFR Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, has also nominated and inaugurated the Remo version of the Committee as below:

– Otunba Tunji Lawal Solarin (Member)
– Sen Dipo Odujirin (Member)
– Chief Akin Soname (Member)
– Engr Dele Amoda (Member)
– Prince Abdul Abayomi (Member)
– Mr Fatai Folarin (Member)
– Mr Sesan Ogun (Member)
– Hon John Obafemi (Member/Technical Adviser)
– Mr Wole Awe (Secretary)
Included in the terms of reference are:
– to consider the desirability and viability of creating a new State from old Ijebu Province.
– to agree the Name, Capital and constituent LG of the New State.
– any other issues incidental to the above.
A joint meeting of the two committees is expected in the coming week, to harmonise and finalise on all grey areas.”
The choice of Ijebu Ode as capital, because of its central locational distance to all the existing nine local government council areas of Ogun East Senatorial District may have been settled with all stakeholders.
The whole of Ogun State, in particular, and Nigeria, is looking forward to the harmonised and final decision of the joint session of the two committees.
