Gunmen who stormed a Sunday service at an Evangelical Church of West Africa in Omugo, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, have demanded a staggering N1bn ransom for the release of abducted worshippers.
The church’s Pastor-in-Charge, Toba Omole, confirmed on Wednesday that eight congregants, including his wife, are still being held captive days after the attack.
According to him, the kidnappers made contact with the community on Tuesday, briefly allowing families to speak with their loved ones before issuing the ransom demand.
“This morning, we were able to hear from those who were abducted. I heard my wife’s voice and those of other members,” Omole said.
“About eight of them are still in captivity, and the kidnappers have demanded N1 billion for their release.”
Omole described the demand as outrageous and far beyond the means of the victims’ families and the rural community, calling for urgent government intervention and public support.
“This is far beyond what we can afford. We are appealing for help and intervention, including efforts toward negotiation to secure their release,” he added.
The attack has since thrown Omugo into panic, with many residents fleeing their homes over fears of another assault and what they describe as inadequate security presence.
By Monday, the community showed signs of mass displacement, as deserted homes and vehicles loaded with belongings signaled a hurried exodus to safer areas.
Amid the uncertainty, families of the abducted continue to cling to hope, even as calls grow louder for decisive action to curb rising insecurity and rural banditry in the state.
