The trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the 46 – year – old driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the road accident involving heavyweight boxing icon, Anthony Joshua and his two associates has been adjourned till February 25, 2026.
The accident which occurred on Monday morning, December 29, 2025 at the Makun corridor og Lagos – Ibadan expressway claimed the lives of the boxer’s two friends, significantly wrecking the Lexus Jeep after it rammed into a stationary truck carrying soya beans. Joshua and Kayode survived with minor injuries. The boxer survived because he had swapped seats at thr last moment, a decision that saved his life.
Joshua’s associates – Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele – both men were 36 and died on the spot. Ghami was Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach while Ayodele was his personal trainer.
However, shortly after his discharge from the hospital, Kayode was arrested by the Nigeria Police and arraigned before Sagamu Magistrate’s Court presided over by Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun on January 2, 2026.
Kayode was slammed with four – count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing Death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F: 135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as applicable in Ogun State).
“Reckless and Negligent Driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the same Act. Driving Without Due Care and Attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1) of the Act and driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.”
At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that they had four witnesses, but only three were present in court, and asked for the adjournment of the case to allow for legal advice from the office of the Attorney General of the state through the office of the department of public prosecution(DPP) and in the interest of justice.
The oral application was initially opposed by the counsel to the defendant, Abiodun Olalekan, who expressed the readiness to proceed with the case.
However, giving her ruling on the application for adjournment, the court granted the prayer and adjourned the case to February 25 for further hearing.
Meanwhile, in spite of the trauma, Anthony Joshua has returned to training 19 days after the saddening incident. He shared gym videos on Snapchat, calling it “mental strength therapy.” He is in London since January 2 and has been recovering at home.
