President Muhammadu Buhari has unveiled newly re-designed naira notes at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
President Buhari performed the brief ceremony on Wednesday morning just minutes before the start of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
He presented to the public the new N1000, N500 and N200 notes at at the ceremony that had Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha; Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari; and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan in attendance.
Others were Ministers and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele.
Earlier, Buhari had said he was in full support of Emefiele to pursue the policy of redesigning the nation’s notes.
The CBN Governor said the introduction of new notes was a deliberate action by government to check corruption and counterfeiting of the notes, assuring however that the naira notes currently in use will remain as legal tenders till 31st January, 2023.
