The simmering anger and frustration of athletes participating in the ongoing National Sports Festival in Ogun State boiled over on Wednesday morning with the host team, Team Ogun, storming Babcock University Ilishan, venue of the camp for all the athletes, blocking the main entrance of the varsity and grounding all activities.
Athletes from Ogun State who are protesting over unpaid allowance for the sports festival tagged Gateway Games, seized the main gate of the camp for hours since 5.00am, preventing vehicular movement, a development that also left many states contingent stranded.
Sources told The Daily Crucible that the Ogun athletes decided to stage the protest to demand payment for their allowance as the sports festival is gradually coming to a close, fearing that when the games are concluded the state government may never pay it at all as was experienced by some of them many times in the past.
However, no official reaction yet from the games organisers or the state ministry of sports as of the time of filing the report.
