UMUAHIA: People suspected to be Unknown Gunmen (UGM) operating at the border community between Abia and Imo States have attacked a military checkpoint at Ekenobizi village corridor of Abia State, leaving trail of blood behind.
Sketchy information reaching The Daily Crucible reveals that three people were kìlled in the pre – dawn gun battle between the gunmen and soldiers, who fought fiercely to repel the attackers.
Unofficial sources said one the three persons kìlled during the gun duel had his hèad separated from the rest of the body afterwards.
The Daily Crucible further gathered that the UGM attacked the checkpoint earlier than 6am on Wednesday, November 13, abandoned their operational vehicle and fled on foot as the soldiers unleashed fire on them in self-defense.
As at the time of filing this report, the number of casualties can not be ascertained as the area is too volatile to access.
According to sources, panic – stricken villagers have deserted their homes and fled to neighbouring communities as soldiers surged into Ekenobizi community and environs searching for the fleeing UGM.
“This morning about 6a.m, Unknown Gunmen attacked army check point at Ekenobizi, a village boundary between Abia and Onuimo section of Imo State.
“We also learnt that the villagers have deserted their homes as the military stormed the community, searching for the unknown Gunmen who abandoned their vehicle while fleeing on foot.
“The entire stretch of the road from Umuahia, the Abia State capital through to the boundary between Umuahia and Obowo community, the neighbouring town of Imo State are no go areas for now.
“We, therefore, are alerting anyone plying that route now to be very careful and be safety conscious,” a source said.
Efforts to get the police spokesperson of the Abia State Police Command for reaction about the incident was not successful as at12: 00 noon time.
