NEW YORK — In a speech that has sent shockwaves through the diplomatic corridors of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Argentine President Javier Milei, in his debut address on Tuesday, launched a scathing attack on what he described as the “globalist” agenda and the moral grandstanding of the “woke” movement. His fiery rhetoric wasn’t simply another routine criticism of global governance; it was an unapologetic denouncement of the U.N.’s Agenda 2030, which he labelled a “threat to global freedom.” His message, a direct challenge to the established norms at the United Nations, marks a turning point not only for Argentina’s foreign policy but for the future trajectory of international diplomacy.

Argentine President Javier Milei condemned globalism, the U.N.’s Agenda 2030, and the woke agenda in his debut address at the United Nations General Assembly, calling them threats to global freedom. Read the full Atlantic Post analysis. September 24, 2024.

A Revolutionary Voice Amidst Conformity: Milei’s Defiant Stand

President Milei’s speech was a glaring departure from the usual diplomatic jargon that typifies addresses at the General Assembly. Leaders from around the globe often align their messages with the U.N.’s prevailing priorities, from climate change to wealth redistribution and the curbing of misinformation. In stark contrast, Milei’s discourse was an outright rebellion against these talking points, steeped in his libertarian ideals. The Argentine president framed his victory in 2023 as the product of a “precipitous failure of over a century of collectivist policies,” suggesting that his election represented a larger global rejection of socialist and interventionist economic models.

His entrance onto the world stage at the U.N. was nothing short of spectacular. As a self-professed libertarian economist, Milei seized the moment to outline his opposition to the ideological foundations of the U.N.’s flagship initiatives, including the widely publicised Agenda 2030—a comprehensive global plan aimed at addressing poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, and peace. He branded these initiatives as “dangerous,” asserting that they infringe upon national sovereignty and individual liberty.

A Paradoxical Praise for the U.N.: Milei’s Contradictory Opening

In what appeared to be a calculated manoeuvre to gain the moral high ground, Milei began his address by recognising the U.N.’s historical achievements, particularly its role in preventing a third world war. He noted that the international organisation was founded on the heels of two devastating world wars, which together claimed over 120 million lives. “We went from having two world wars in less than 40 years… to having 70 consecutive years of relative peace and global stability,” Milei declared, pointing to this as the institution’s “outstanding success in the history of nations.”

This initial praise for the U.N. was likely an attempt to soften the blow before unleashing his most damning critique: the United Nations, Milei contended, has “mutated” from its original purpose. The organisation that once worked to maintain peace and foster global cooperation had, in Milei’s view, transformed into a “leviathan of multiple tentacles” seeking to control not only the actions of sovereign states but the very lives of individuals.

Milei’s Religious Allusion: A Prophetic Lens on Global Politics

One of the most dramatic moments of Milei’s speech came when he invoked a passage from the Book of Isaiah. Milei, who is known for his deep interest in Judaism, read aloud the prophetic scripture: “And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” This biblical allusion wasn’t just a rhetorical flourish; it underscored Milei’s belief that the U.N.’s initial peacekeeping mission was aligned with a divine vision of global harmony.

However, Milei argued that the U.N. has strayed far from this ideal. “The current U.N.,” he warned, “is a supranational government model of international bureaucrats who want to impose on the citizens of the world a determined way of life.” This statement cut to the heart of his libertarian critique: the U.N., in Milei’s view, has become an overreaching institution, intent on dictating moral and social norms under the guise of global governance.

The War on Agenda 2030: Milei’s Stark Warning

Perhaps the most controversial aspect of Milei’s speech was his vehement opposition to the U.N.’s Agenda 2030. This comprehensive initiative has been heralded by many as the world’s best hope for sustainable development, tackling pressing issues such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. But for Milei, Agenda 2030 is not a solution—it is a threat.

“The U.N.’s Agenda 2030 is a threat to global freedom,” he declared bluntly, warning that its implementation would require the surrender of national sovereignty to international bureaucrats. According to Milei, the 2030 agenda represents a form of global authoritarianism, cloaked in the language of benevolence and sustainability. It is, in his words, an effort by “global elites” to centralize power and enforce a uniform way of life across diverse cultures and nations.

Milei’s critique of Agenda 2030 was grounded in his libertarian philosophy, which prioritizes individual liberty and national self-determination above all else. For him, the U.N.’s agenda is not just misguided—it is tyrannical.

The Woke Agenda and Moral Posturing: Milei’s Challenge to Social Movements

Another key target of Milei’s speech was the “woke agenda,” a term used pejoratively to describe progressive social movements advocating for racial, gender, and economic justice. Milei’s disdain for this movement was palpable as he decried what he called “the moral posturing of the woke agenda.” To Milei, the rise of wokeism represents a dangerous encroachment on personal freedoms, with its emphasis on collective guilt, victimhood, and forced conformity to leftist social norms.

“The woke agenda is moral tyranny,” Milei proclaimed, asserting that it stifles free speech and individual thought. He accused its advocates of using the U.N. and other international institutions as platforms to impose their values on the world, regardless of cultural differences or democratic processes.

Milei’s Alternative Vision for Global Cooperation

Despite his scathing critique of the U.N. and its initiatives, Milei did not reject the idea of global cooperation outright. Instead, he called for a reimagining of international relations based on voluntary collaboration and mutual respect for national sovereignty. Milei’s vision for global governance is one in which nations engage with each other freely and competitively, without the interference of supranational organisations or bureaucratic elites.

“We must return to a world order where nations are free to choose their own paths,” Milei urged. He envisioned a global system that allows for the exchange of goods, ideas, and cultures without the imposition of uniform policies or values.

A Call to Action: Milei’s Final Words

Milei concluded his speech with a call to action, urging world leaders to resist the creeping influence of globalism and to reclaim their nations’ sovereignty. “The future of freedom depends on our ability to defend it,” he warned. His final words were a rallying cry for those who believe that the U.N. and its agenda have gone too far.

“We are at a crossroads,” Milei stated, “and the choices we make today will determine whether the world remains free or whether it falls under the control of a global elite.”

The Diplomatic Fallout: Polarisation at the UNGA

As the dust settles on Milei’s explosive debut at the United Nations, the global diplomatic community remains sharply divided. Some nations, particularly those with nationalist or libertarian governments, have applauded Milei’s bold stance against globalism. Others, especially proponents of Agenda 2030 and progressive social policies, have condemned his remarks as regressive and dangerous.

The impact of Milei’s speech on Argentina’s international relations is yet to be seen, but one thing is clear: President Javier Milei has firmly established himself as a disruptive force on the world stage, and his vision for Argentina—and for the world—stands in stark contrast to the prevailing globalist order.
