The Oyo State Police Command says it has arrested the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola; the Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan, Fasasi Abdulahi; and six others over the Wednesday Children’s Funfair tragedy in a private school, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The former Queen (Olori) of Ile – Ife was listed as the main sponsor of the event that turned tragic.
The Daily Crucible reported yesterday that dozens of children were trampled to death following a deadly stampede that erupted as desperate parents and children struggled to surge into the venue of the funfair through a restricted entrance channel.
Many others were also critically injured.
However, multiple sources claimed that the number of lives lost to the stampede has risen to 35.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, in a statement on Thursday, confirmed the arrest of Naomi Silekunola; the Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan, Fasasi Abdulahi; and others as well as the rising statistics of children that died in the tragedy.
Osifeso, however, assured the public, stating, “Justice will be served accordingly.”
“Eight persons have since been arrested for their various involvements in the event.
“Among those detained are Silekunola, aged 31, and Fasasi Abdulahi, the 56-year-old principal of the school.
“The other individuals arrested include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, with ages ranging from 25 to 52 years.
“So far, 35 minors have been documented dead while 6 others are critically injured,” Osifeso stated.
