A yet – to – be established number of Unknown Gunmen(UGM) roared in the early hours of Tuesday and attacked the advance team of Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, with the aides feared injured.
This comes barely days after Governor Otti and some Igbo leaders visited the convicted leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) facility in Sokoto – the seat of the Caliphate – where he is serving life sentence for terrorism.
The assailants who were believed to be fleeing gunmen, opened fire on the vehicle conveying three members of the advance team as they approached the airport corridor in Imo State.
Sources claimed that the attackers mistook the advance team for the Governors Convoy and attacked them at a location between Umuowa and Ihite junction, shortly before the Sam Mbakwe Airport Junction in Imo State.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Citizen Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday via a statement said, “no life was lost in the attack.”
He stated, “In the early hours of today, December 2nd, an advance team of three members from the Office of the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, on duty to Sam Mbakwe Airport, Imo State, was attacked by unidentified gunmen. The incident occurred between Umuowa and Ihite junction, shortly before the Sam Mbakwe Airport Junction in Imo State.
“The general public is hereby informed that the convoy of Governor Otti was not involved in this attack, and no lives were lost during the unfortunate incident.”
